Beef and Italian ice. AND hot dogs.

I'm still a believer that Jay's has the best beef in Chicago. Though tonight, I was craving a creamy Italian ice from Johnnie's in Elmwood Park.

The beef is just fine, however, no other ice in the city compares. Sadly though, we asked if their hot dogs were Vienna Beef and they promptly said "yes" without hesitation. So we ordered one - why would they lie? - and learned quickly that we had been taken for a ride. Shame on you, Johnnie.

For those of you who love their beef, here's the recipe for Johnnie's ...and, for fun, a picture of the cute family with whom we shared a table.

So, we weren't quite satisfied and proceeded to seek out the real deal at Gene + Jude's Red Hots in River Grove. Where they prominently display the yellow Vienna Beef sign as a part of their motif.

Wow. We are stuffed now. All for under $20.
