How we spent $4.

We've been to Costa Rica four times now over the past six years, and in the past, we've lamented the lack of fresh seafood that one could buy to prepare in a kitchen; seems as though the restaurants in town aren't OK with the locals undermining their menus.

But on our first day in town, we were walking across the beach next to town and noticed a man carrying up a net filled with fresh fish and lobsters. Seth and Ben straight up asked him, in terrible Spanish, "Se vende pescado, amigo?" And he smiled and said, "Si, si!"

And so we met Domingo, and asked him to catch us a fish. And so he did. What you see here is a Yellow Jack Fish, around 10 lbs in weight. Upon looking it up, we learned that some predatory fish in this part of the world carry a food-borne illness called Ciguatera, which can cause nausea, diarrhea, and even hallucinations (sweet!).

Needless to say, some of us didn't eat the fish. I, for one, was a part of that group.

But those who did found it to be delicious.

One Yellow Jack Fish, fresh from the ocean (second to last photo is of the grilled fish): 2000 CRC = $3.95.

Uh, yeah... we were a little confused by the price, too!

We also made: beans + rice, roasted red pepper + pickled cabbage, polenta with green onions, garlic bread, and chicken kabobs with a homemade marinade ($38 for everything).

I waited to post this to make sure no one came down with Montezuma's Revenge. It has been over 48 hours since we ate the fish and everyone is fine. So tomorrow, we've decided to purchase fresh lobsters from Domingo. I can't wait!
